This settlement resolves a lawsuit against Steven Croman and his associated real estate companies brought by the New York Attorney General’s Office because of actions against rent-controlled and rent-stabilized tenants. The complaint alleged that the defendants harassed tenants and committed fraud and other unlawful practices, such as filing baseless lawsuits against tenants, serving tenants with false rent and eviction notices, and using false pretenses to gain access to tenants’ apartments.

You may be eligible if you meet both of these conditions:

  • You are or were a tenant with your name on the lease for a rent-controlled or rent-stabilized apartment owned by Steven Croman, where you lived at some time between July 1, 2011 and December 20, 2017.
  • You did not receive a buyout of $20,000 or more, not including an amount meant to cover rent or arrears, in exchange for agreeing to give up your lease and move out.

If you are not rent-controlled or rent-stabilized but you are currently claiming that you are entitled to a rent-stabilized lease, you may submit a claim form for consideration. 

Typical Settlement Amount:

Each valid claim will receive a pro-rata share of the settlement fund. One payment will be allocated to each apartment, divided equally among the tenants named on the lease.
