Case Summary:

Defendants have agreed to a $17,500,000 settlement in a case involving a flood, fire, explosion, and evacuation at Escambia County Central Booking and Detention Facility (CBDF) in Pensacola, Florida. The fund is to recompense the approximately 668 people present at the event, including inmates, employees, and first responders. Two people were killed and one became permanently paraplegic; others suffered injuries and trauma.

Eligibility:

You may be eligible if you were an inmate, employee, or first responder present at the April 29-30, 2014 flood, fire, explosion, and evacuation at Escambia County Central Booking and Detention Facility (CBDF) in Pensacola, Florida; if you were married to such a claimant at the time of the events; if you are a wrongful death beneficiaries of a person who died during the event; or if you were related to and have a claim on a claimant.

In order for the settlement to be approved, all 668 claimants must agree to it. Spouses, wrongful death beneficiaries or heirs, or other relatives with a claim must sign the claim form, but will not receive a payment.

Typical Settlement Amount:

Awards for the three gravely injured persons have been determined; all others will be give pro-rata shares of the remaining net settlement fund in a complicated formula that depends on the seriousness of injuries and other factors.
