The City of Hartford, Connecticut has agreed to settle a class action on behalf of tenants in the city who were forced to move because their buildings were condemned as part of a City Housing Code enforcement. Individuals displaced in this way are “displaced persons” under the Uniform Relocation Assistance Act (URAA) and are entitled to receive certain benefits and payments under the URAA, but the complaint contended that the city had not been living up to its obligations.Docket Number:

You must submit documentation to show that you were a legal resident of the condemned home and that you were living there for at least 90 days before it was condemned. Documentation may include rent receipts, utility bills, lease agreements, and the like.Eligibility:
You may be eligible if (a) you were required to move from your home in Harford, Connecticut, between January 1, 2010 and September 30, 2015, because of an order from code enforcement officials, (b) you can submit a claim form with documentation showing that you were the lawful occupant of the home that was condemned, and (c) you can show that you were living in the home for at least 90 days before it was condemned.Typical Settlement Amount:
(1) Payment of up to $500 as reimbursement for moving and storage expenses; and (2) for lawful occupants of condemned homes who lived there for at least 90 days before the building was condemned, an additional $4,000. Deductions: (1) any previous assistance you received from the city or as rental subsidies to help with the displacement. Payment is per household, not per person.
