Global Tel*Link Corporation and DSI-ITI, LLC are settling a class action about their Inmate Calling Services (ICS) for New Jersey State prisons and for correctional facilities in Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren Counties. Inmates used ICL to make calls to friends and family. The complaint argues that GTL charged unconscionably high rates for calls, in violation of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, and that it also charged unconscionably high deposit fees.

Eligibility:

You may be eligible if you are a person in New Jersey who, between 2006 and 2016, was incarcerated in a New Jersey prison or correctional institution and who used the phone service provided by the defendants in this case; or who established an AdvancePay account with the defendants in order to receive calls from persons incarcerated in New Jersey. The class excludes people who were incarcerated in Essex Country before June 2010 and people who received call from people incarcerated in Essex County before June 2011.

Typical Settlement Amount:

Partial refund of charges. If you are currently using GTL’s services, you will receive a credit to your account.
- Calls made between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2008: 20% of the total amount spent for calling time above $.05 per minute
- Calls made between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2011: 15% of the total amount spent for calling time above $.05 per minute
- Calls made between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016: 10% of the total amount spent for calling time above $.05 per minute

Total Settlement Amount: $25 million in cash and credits
