Case Summary:This combined class action alleges that the many defendants illegally conspired to reduce the supply of eggs in the US domestic market, by means such as agreements to limit or dispose of hen flocks, a pretextual animal welfare program designed to reduce the egg supply, agreements to export eggs to remove them from the domestic market, and unlawful coercion to make sure others complied. The effect of the measures, the complaint says, was to raise prices, making buyers pay more for shell eggs and egg products than they would otherwise have paid, thus violating antitrust laws.
The most recent settlement involves defendant Michael Farms, Inc. Some defendants have previously settled, while others still have not.
Shell eggs are whole eggs in their shells (not include specialty eggs, such as organic or cage-free eggs); egg products are whole eggs or any part of them that have been removed from their shells for further processing into a dried, frozen, or liquid form.
