Jeep Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid Sudden Shutdowns Class Action

Jibri Ward-Richardson had just leased a new Jeep Wrangler 4xe and was driving it home. “Less than 2 miles from the dealership and shortly after merging onto Interstate 81,” the complaint for this class action alleges, “the Ward-Richardson Jeep suddenly, and without warning, shut off all systems.” This class action brings suit against FCA US, LLC for its 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid vehicles, alleging that they can shut down without warning.

The class for this action is all individuals in the US who bought or leased a Jeep Wrangler 4xe.

That first stalling incident happened to Ward-Richardson, one of the two plaintiffs in this case, on September 17, 2021. He called the dealership, which told him to bring it back to the dealership for a “quick fix.” On September 22, it told him that a software update had been done on the vehicle and that it was safe to drive.

A short time after he got the vehicle back on September 24, Ward-Richardson was driving toward the interstate when it shut down again. Also, the complaint claims, “several error messages were displayed on the information screen, the check engine light illuminated, and the vehicle would not accelerate.” It eventually stopped entirely.

Ward-Richardson had the vehicle towed to the dealership. On October 1, the dealership told him it was fully repaired, but while a service advisor was driving to return the vehicle to him, the check engine light came on again. The dealership then kept possession of the vehicle.

On October 12, Ward-Richardson was again told the vehicle was repaired and that he could pick it up. On October 23, while he was driving, the check engine light came on again and a hybrid service message appeared. Ward-Richardson went to pull into a parking lot, and as he did so, the vehicle shut down again.

On November 3, the dealership told him that the problem could not be replicated, and that he should come in and pick up the vehicle. The complaint suggests that the vehicle “was not adequately repaired.”

The vehicle belonging to the other plaintiff in this case also suffered sudden and mysterious shutdowns.

The complaint cites reports filed online with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of similar incidents with these vehicles. The complaint alleges that FCA has therefore known about this problem for quite a while.

However, the complaint alleges, FCA has not notified the public or owners and lessees of the vehicles, has not recalled them, and has not found a fix for the problem.
