Electrolux Easily-Turned Burner Control Knobs Class Action

This class action sues Electrolux AB and Electrolux North America for burner knobs for gas and electric ranges that can be turned on accidentally. The complaint alleges that these knobs have been installed on ranges and cooktops that are sold under the Electrolux, AEG, and Frigidaire brands and that the inadvertent activation of burners is dangerous.

The Nationwide Class for this action is all residents of the US and its territories who bought a new range or otherwise acquired a range, from among the products at issue, primarily for household use and not for resale. A Michigan Subclass has also been defined for those in the above class who are residents of Michigan.

The knobs that are the subject of this complaint are front-mounted knobs that can be accidentally actuated, or turned on, by minimal contact. This causes “the ignition of gas Range burners and heating of electric Range burners unbeknownst to the consumer” which can lead to “hazardous conditions—leaking gas or heating electric cooktops to extreme temperatures—and serious risk of fire, property damage, and personal injury.”

The complaint alleges that the cause is “low detent force,” that is, the small amount of force required to push the burner in, as well as the small distance the knob needs to travel in order to turn the gas or electricity on. Also, the complaint claims that the knobs do not have any guards to prevent accidental activation.

Plaintiff Sandra Parker bought a Frigidaire Model Number FFGF3052TS for around $500 that was installed in her home sometime around April 2019. Shortly after that, the complaint alleges, she noticed the problem with the burners getting unintentionally turned on and contacted Electrolux. The representative she spoke to suggested she buy new burner stems, but it seemed that Electrolux was not offering to pay for them, the complaint alleges, and she eventually decided it was not adequate.

In March 2022, the complaint alleges, she called Electrolux again. “During that call,” the complaint alleges, “the Electrolux customer service representative told Ms. Parker there was no fix for her defective range.” Although she has since bought child safety covers for the knobs, the complaint claims, “they often cause problems by getting crunched in the ove[n] door.”

The complaint alleges that Electrolux has known about this problem since at least 2015, because of the many incident reports filed at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). However, it claims, consumers have no way of knowing about the problem until they buy one of the defective ranges and begin using it.
