The US Department of the Interior is a federal executive department of the US government, headed by a Cabinet Secretary. It manages and ensures conservation of most federal lands and natural resources, and also for the administration of programs for Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, territorial affairs, and insular areas of the US, plus programs related to historic preservation. Because of its broad responsibilities, it is sometimes jokingly called “the Department of Everything Else.”
