Audi Defective 2.0-Liter Turbocharged Engine and Pistons Class Action

Who is responsible for defects in Audi vehicles? This class action brings suit against Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., which does business as Audi of America, Inc., and two German companies, Audi AG and Volkswagen AG. The complaint claims that the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine (2.0T engine) is the problem, because, among other things, it can suddenly fail, losing engine power.

The class for this action is all individuals in the US who bought or leased any 2012-2017 Audi vehicle equipped with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engines. Thirteen subclasses have also been proposed.

The complaint alleges that Volkwagen has a history of problems with the 2.0T engine. Class actions have previously been filed for excessive oil consumption in certain of its 2009-2011 vehicles and for a defective timing chain design for certain of its 2008-2013 and 2012-2019 vehicles. VW has had to extend its warranty periods and reimburse drivers for costs related to the engine design.

According to the complaint, the problem lies with the piston rings or heads, which are made so that “the piston rings do not seat properly in the grooves of the piston head … in the 2.0T engine. The Piston Defect can cause the pistons and the engine itself to fail at any time. It can also cause the engine to consume an excessive amount of oil, because the combustion chamber is not properly sealed off from the parts of the engine which require engine oil for lubrication.”

The problem doesn’t end there. The problem creates shrapnel from the piston rings or heads that move into the engine, damaging it.

The complaint claims, “A replacement of the piston rings and/or pistons costs thousands of dollars, and the cost for replacing a 2.0T Engine is well over $10,000.”

Many of the ten plaintiffs in this case experienced excessive oil consumption or piston problems with their vehicles. One claims his 2014 Audi Q5’s low oil light illuminates ever 500 to 600 miles.

Another had an Audi A4, and at around 45,000 miles, her Check Engine light came on. The reading indicated a “cylinder misfire.” The dealership confirmed that the vehicle had a cylinder misfire due to a loss of compression in the engine chamber.

However, the dealership and Audi refused to do the necessary repairs under warranty. So did another dealership, and the vehicle “continue[s] to exhibit symptoms due to loss of compression in the engine, including but not limited [to,] rough starting of the engine, excessive shuddering and loud operation of the engine, and inability to maintain a consistent idle.”

The complaint reproduces numerous online postings and other complaints about the same problems from other customers.

The complaint alleges that Volkswagen was aware of the defect when it sold the vehicles and did not warn prospective customers about the problem.
